GIANTS Netball are just one win away from a second successive Super Netball Grand Final.

After losing to the West Coast Fever 57-63 last Saturday, the GIANTS will take on reigning premiers the Sunshine Coast Lightning in a Preliminary Final at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday afternoon.

Veteran Bec Bulley said the GIANTS were disappointed with their performance against the Fever but are ready to take on the Lightning.

“After a really tough loss, we’re were all feeling a bit down and disappointed that we didn’t gain the rights to host a Grand Final,” she told GIANTS Netball TV.

“But we’ve moved on now and we’re looking forward to playing the Sunshine Coast.

“We certainly needed to take the time to reflect on our game and I think everyone was really disappointed with their game individually.

“We’ve done our review, we’ve really identified areas that we can improve but we also worked on the areas that we do well.”

Bulley said the GIANTS had closely watched the Lightning’s thrilling one goal minor semi-final win over the Queensland Firebirds last Sunday.

“We watched the Lightning versus Firebirds game. It was obviously a really tough encounter, Lightning are doing great defensively,” she said.

“I think Geva Mentor and Karla Pretorius have a great combination, so they’re going to be on fire and Steph Wood and Caitlin Basset are a great combination and Steph’s really stepping up and shooting a lot of goals.”

While the Lightning have had a punishing game to recover from, Bulley and the GIANTS are wary of the reigning premiers.

“I think a lot of teams can fall into that trap of thinking they’ve played their Grand Final the week before, but I certainly don’t think that will be the case with the Lightning,” she said.

“I think they’ve got too many experienced players and a few fierce competitors and they will want to go all the way and we need to expect that and be ready to meet them.

“We need to be playing our best and that’s all we need to control and focus on.

The match will also be the final time that Serena Guthrie and Susan Pettitt will play at home in the GIANTS’ dress.

English import Guthrie announced during the week that she will return home in 2019 while goal shooter Pettitt announced her retirement last month.
