We’ve already looked at two of the most intriguing midfield battles for this Saturday’s Elimination Final between the GIANTS and the Swans, but now it’s time to look at arguably the most crucial; Josh Kelly versus Dan Hannebery.

Kelly’s influence on the GIANTS’ season has been enormous with his return from a groin injury in round 10 coinciding with the GIANTS’ mid-season resurgence that saw them win nine of their final 12 matches.

The 23-year-old has averaged 27.6 disposals and 5.9 inside 50s in his 15 games while also kicking 10 goals and assisting in 15.

Hannebery, meanwhile, has been in and out of the Swans’ team with injury and has averaged 18.2 disposals and 2.4 tackles across his 14 games.

The 27-year-old was influential in the Swans’ round three win over the GIANTS but was quiet in their round 22 win.

Why is the contest crucial?

If Hannebery can help nullify Kelly’s influence the GIANTS will find life tough going forward.

On the other hand, if Hannebery returns to his damaging best the GIANTS might need to rethink their midfield structure and look to tag him.

Kelly’s ability to send the GIANTS inside 50 and find their forward targets in Jeremy Cameron and Harry Himmelberg makes him very dangerous.

While never selfish, Kelly has been more selfless in 2018, equalling his 2017 goal assist tally of 15 in nine fewer games, while he averages 7.8 score involvements per game.
