The GIANTS are pleased to announce former Collingwood premiership captain Nick Maxwell will join the club as part of the GIANTS’ leadership program.
Maxwell will deliver a range of leadership programs and initiatives across the entire playing group while working closely with the GIANTS leadership group and emerging leaders.
The 32-year old will take over some of the leaderships programs implemented by Football Operations Manager Simon Katich, who will continue his role with the GIANTS in a part-time capacity.
The former Australian Test cricketer will continue to work directly with the GIANTS in a mentoring capacity as he looks to spend more time with his young family and explore a range of other opportunities within cricket.
Maxwell said he was pleased to be joining the GIANTS as the club entered a new growth phase.
“I’ve been really impressed with the GIANTS and I’m looking forward to working closely with the club’s leadership group as well as some of the young emerging leaders who continue to grow with each year in the AFL competition,” Maxwell said.
“I’m excited by the opportunity to help this driven young playing group at an exciting time for them and the club generally."
GIANTS General Manager Football Graeme Allan said Maxwell’s experience would be invaluable for the AFL’s youngest club.
“Nick has proven leadership qualities that have seen him take a team all the way to the top of the AFL,” Allan said.
“His background and knowledge will further enhance the leadership skills of our own leaders, including co-captains Callan Ward and Phil Davis.
“We have developed a really strong culture at the GIANTS in recent years, led by Simon Katich and others, and Nick will no doubt continue to build on that leadership framework.
“We are extremely grateful for the enormous amount of time and effort Simon has put into his role over the past two years and we look forward to him continuing to work with the club in a part-time capacity.”
Nick Maxwell played 208 games for Collingwood after joining the Magpies via the 2002 rookie draft. He captained Collingwood from 2007 to 2013 and led the club to the 2010 premiership.
Since retiring in 2014, Maxwell has worked in a leadership capacity at NRL club the Melbourne Storm as well as in the media with Channel 7 and SEN.
Maxwell will begin his role with the GIANTS next week.
