GIANTS defender Zac Williams will take to Domain Stadium on Sunday, with a different number on his back as he pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Australian Referendum.
Williams will don 67 for the GIANTS' AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round clash with West Coast in Perth, setting aside his usual number 29.
The success of the 1967 Referendum saw Indigenous Australians included in the census and allow the Commonwealth to create laws for them.
"The AFL is doing a great job with Indigenous Round and letting players celebrate by wearing their special jumpers and boots," Williams told The Daily Telegraph.
"It’s important to share so we can understand each other and this helps to close the gap with our culture.
"This is a very big year for us with the 50-year anniversary of the 1967 referendum and gives us the chance to promote its importance.
"Having the wider community learn about our history helps educate and bring us all closer together."
Williams, who hails from Narrandera in Southern New South Wales, is from the Wiradjuri tribe of which his grandfather Ed Murray is an elder.
