Mumford Wins Sheedy Medal
Shane Mumford has won the 2014 Kevin Sheedy Medal in his first season at the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS.
The former Swans premiership ruckman was presented with the medal by the GIANTS’ Inaugural Coach and Director Kevin Sheedy in Sydney tonight.
Mumford, 28, crossed from the Swans at the end of 2013 and took out the club champion award despite missing five games through injury. He polled in 13 of the 17 games he played to finish with 81 votes
Co-captain Callan Ward and small forward Devon Smith were equal runners-up on 72 votes. Midfielder Adam Treloar finished fourth on 62 votes and vice-captain Heath Shaw fifth with 56 votes.
Mumford averaged the second most hit outs in the AFL this season with over 36 per game, including 60 against Melbourne in Round 3, the third highest ever recorded in the AFL.
GIANTS Head Coach Leon Cameron congratulated Mumford on his win.
“Shane has played an instrumental role in leading the GIANTS midfield this year. He is one of the leaders of the club and with the rest of the leadership group helps set the standards and behaviours of the playing group,” Cameron said.
Earlier Chairman Tony Shepherd told the 350 guests the club had “come of age” in 2014.
“It's been a year of significant firsts. Our first win against the Swans, our first win on the road, our first win at the MCG and our first back to back wins,” he said.
“We believe playing finals is a realistic goal in the next two years. After that, anything is possible so long as we remain united and focused on building a great club.
“We want to build a great club like no other. A club that not only wins premierships but delivers great family entertainment and enriches the lives of people in Western Sydney, Canberra and our broader communities.”
