Sheedy’s Last Hurrah in Western Sydney - Round 22, 2013

The GIANTS had battled during the 2013 season, only managing one win when they came up against a Richmond side headed for finals. The match at Spotless Stadium was also Kevin Sheedy’s final match as head coach of the GIANTS in Western Sydney. The Tigers were ruthless against the young GIANTS, winning by 121 points.

Getting Closer – Round 14, 2015

After two defeats to the Tigers in 2014, including a 113 point loss in round 19, the GIANTS showed they were on the rise in 2015. They led the Tigers at the MCG for every break and heading into the final term they held a 15 point lead. Richmond came home with a wet sail, kicking five goals to two, snatching a nine point win. Rhys Palmer kicked three goals, while Jeremy Cameron kicked two as the GIANTS battled manfully without injured stars Stephen Coniglio, Shane Mumford and Phil Davis. 

The Breakthrough – Round 19, 2016

It was 12 months before the two sides met again, this time at UNSW Canberra Oval. This time it was the GIANTS who went home happy. They put the game beyond the Tigers with an eight-goal-to-nil first term, with Richmond failing to kick a goal until the eight-minute mark of the second quarter. Stephen Coniglio earned three Brownlow votes for his 33-disposal performance. while Sam Reid, Steve Johnson and Toby Greene kicked three goals each in the 88 point win. Richmond’s total of 3.5 (23) remains the lowest score conceded by the GIANTS. 

The Classic – Round 9, 2017

For those that were in attendance at the last meeting between the two sides at Spotless Stadium, it was a match to remember. Both sides headed into the game in solid form but it was Richmond who stormed out of the blocks. The Tigers led by 31 points at quarter time, 21 at half time and 25 at three-quarter time thanks to impressive performances by Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Shaun Grigg. The GIANTS flicked the switch in the last quarter, kicking four unanswered goals to draw within a point of the Tigers. Shai Bolton looked to have the game won with a quick snap in the dying minutes but a score review proved GIANTS debutant Harry Perrman had got a fingertip to the ball. With the behind on the board, the Tigers led by three points with just a minute on the clock. What happened next needs to be seen to be believed.

The Prelim – 2nd Preliminary Final, 2017

94,258 people packed into the MCG for a highly-anticipated Preliminary Final clash between the GIANTS  and the Tigers. The GIANTS had lost to Adelaide before beating West Coast to make it through to a second successive Prelim, while the Tigers had convincingly beaten Geelong to book their place in the second last game of the year. The first half was a serious arm wrestle as the GIANTS trailed by a point at half time. Despite an incredible performance from co-captain Callan Ward (25 disposals and three goals) and a breakthrough game from Harry Himmelberg (four goals), the GIANTS were overrun in the second half as the Tigers booked their place in the 2017 Grand Final.
