Blacktown International Sportspark today hosted the finals of the Paul Kelly Cup.
Primary school sides from the GIANTS’ and Swan’s zones competed against each other and had the chance to meet their AFL heroes including the Swans legend.
“It’s a great day down here today,†said Kelly.
“I think the kids enjoy it. It’s good for the kids from out of town to come to Sydney and see what it’s all about.
“A lot of the idea of the Paul Kelly Cup was to get the kids that don’t always play Aussie Rules a game.
“A lot of the kids here probably don’t even play footy of a weekend.
“They love to meet the GIANTS boys, they just like to see me because of the name, I think.â€
GIANTS Co-captain Luke Power was also on hand to lend support to the players, but disagreed that he and his teammates were the star attraction.
“We’ve come down to sign some autographs but it’s all about Paul Kelly,†said Power.
“It’s the Paul Kelly Cup. He’s a legend of the game and was a great player.
“He was one of the guys I looked up to when I was starting.
“It was great for me to meet him let alone these young kids who don’t often get this sort of opportunity as they come from remote areas.
“We were all kids once, we all played junior footy, so it’s always good to come out and see programs like this.
“It’s good to see some talented juniors from the area showing their wares on this great stadium here at Blacktown.
“I think it’s just good to get out onto a quality ground and play against quality players from other areas and just see exactly where they’re at.
“They get to meet people, and have some good fun. There’s plenty of parents and family here.â€
St Pats Albury took out Thursday’s boy’s championship while Finley won the girl’s championship.
