The GIANTS produced a four-goal fourth quarter to defeat Richmond by 16 points in Friday night’s AFLW practice match at Blacktown International Sportspark.
The dry conditions suited the GIANTS’ playing style, with an evident improvement following the previous practice match against the Power in wet conditions.
Head coach Cam Bernasconi previously said he was seeking consistency and continuity from his side and it was a four-quarter performance that his side delivered on Friday night.
“I was stoked with how the girls played the game plan for four quarters,” Bernasconi said.
“I felt like we were on top for most of the night and to see the girls stick with it and break the game away in the final quarter was really pleasing.
“It was a really positive hit out in true game-like circumstances and a great reflection of the block of work we have just put in to close out pre-season.”
The GIANTS trailed the Tigers at the final break before a fourth quarter surge saw the home team overcome last year’s semi-finalists.
“I didn’t say anything different [at three quarter-time],” Bernasconi confessed.
“I just told them that what they were doing was holding up and it was just a matter of time. We were giving ourselves opportunities through our system, and it was really pleasing that they stuck to it, believed and trusted the process and then the result looked after itself.
“I think it showed as well that if we play to our best we should be able to match it with anyone this year.”
The GIANTS were bolstered by three key inclusions for Friday night’s hit out with Alyce Parker and Jess Doyle returning to the side, as well as the return of Pepa Randall following her 10-month rehabilitation from her ACL injury sustained in September last year.
“It was great to welcome those three back, all three are such competitors,” said Bernasconi.
“Jess came in and was a strong target in front of the ball.
“Alyce returned and proved she’ll be a real threat once again this season.
“And having Pep back in the side just lifts the whole group. She’ll only get better and better the more she plays as well.”
Other stand out performers for Bernasconi were Tarni Evans, Alicia Eva, Zarlie Goldsworthy and Rebecca Beeson.
“Tarni Evans off half-back was impressive and looks primed to pick up where she left off at the end of last season.
“Eva hitting the scoreboard from the midfield was great to see and the combination of Parker and Goldsworthy playing on ball and up forward looked dangerous.

“And Rebecca Beeson once again showed her class as she continues to get more minutes under her belt following her return from concussion complications.”
The GIANTS now turn their focus to the start of the NAB AFLW season which begins with a Sydney Derby on Sunday, September 3 at North Sydney Oval.
