We take a look back at the recent history between the Swans and the GIANTS ahead of Sydney Derby IX on Saturday at the SCG.
With just one day to go until one of the most anticipated Sydney Derbies, let’s take a closer look at some of the past results between these two sides.
When the teams last met officially in round 21 last season it was the Swans who dominated, notching 29 more inside-50s and 19 more scoring shots on their way to a 89-point win at Spotless Stadium.
Kurt Tippett kicked five goals and Josh Kennedy was best on ground with 35 disposals and two goals.
But it’s worth noting that the GIANTS were without Shane Mumford, Phil Davis, Dylan Shiel, Tom Scully, Joel Patfull, Matt Buntine and Devon Smith through injury that day, with all seven to line up on Saturday.
A lot has changed in the last six months with the GIANTS boosted by key players returning from injury and the recruitment of another experienced veteran in Steve Johnson.
It might not have been for four points but the most recent clash between the GIANTS and Swans was in round two of the NAB Challenge last month and might give us a better form guide.
The GIANTS won that match by 34 points and played some electric football, taking on opponents and running in waves from defence.
Taking a closer look at the sides that lined up that night versus the teams that will clash on Saturday, there’s few differences.
Mumford only played a quarter of that game after being rested as a precaution when he felt discomfort in his ankle.
The Swans were without George Hewett, Ben McGlynn and Ted Richards at Drummoyne Oval but the GIANTS were missing Stephen Coniglio, Devon Smith and Jonathon Patton who will all play this week.
The Swans will this time be without Michael Talia through injury but the GIANTS have lost Caleb Marchbank to injury too while Jeremy Cameron will miss through suspension.
But that was during pre-season and this time we’re at the SCG where the GIANTS are yet to win a game.
It was a close one the last time these two sides clashed at the iconic venue, with the GIANTS going down by just 21-points.
On that night last April, experience and composure under pressure – plus some poor first half conversion in front of goal from the GIANTS - helped the Swans to a solid win.
Coming into this game, the GIANTS have had one win and one loss with performances at the opposite ends of the spectrum. A disappointing two-point loss to Melbourne in round one was followed up with a spirited performance against Geelong and a historic 13-point win.
The Swans have cruised to two comfortable wins over Collingwood and Carlton respectively and have barely been challenged in their start to the season.
With so many variables, it’s hard to get a read on this week’s ninth instalment of the Sydney Derby but it seems set up to be one of the best in the short history.
It all kicks off with the inaugural Women’s All Stars match between the Swans and GIANTS at 1.40pm before the Swans and GIANTS clash in Sydney Derby IX at 4.35pm.
GIANTS Coach Leon Cameron has issued a call to arms, asking supporters and members to head east, decked out in orange.
