On the eve of the GIANTS’ clash with the Hawks at GIANTS Stadium, exciting forward Callum Brown has re-signed with the club until the end of 2025.
Born in England with Jamaican heritage, Brown was an up-and-coming Gaelic Football star playing for County Derry in Ireland before making the switch to AFL.
Tall, skilful and athletic, Brown was identified by the GIANTS’ Irish scouting program in July 2017, and in October 2018 he joined the GIANTS as a Category B Rookie, the first player to join the GIANTS' men’s team directly from Ireland.
Brown worked on his game before breaking through in 2021, kicking two goals in his first game as the GIANTS beat Geelong. Brown made a big impression in 2022, kicking four goals in his second game against Hawthorn in round 16 in a performance that earned him three Brownlow Medal votes.
The 22-year-old has played eight games so far this season, initially playing down back before a switch to the forward line that has seen him kick seven goals over the past month.
GIANTS General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said it is an exciting signing for the club.
“Callum has always had high talent from an early age but we can’t underestimate the challenge he and other Irish players have adapting to Aussie Rules football,” McCartney.
“He’s shown glimpses of his excitement and development across the past few seasons and so this year he’s putting together a really consistent season at AFL level which is exciting to see.
“He’s got huge upside and is playing a really important role in the team across our forward line. It’s exciting to be able to offer him a two-year extension and know he’ll be kicking impressive goals in the orange and charcoal for years to come.”
Brown said he is equally excited to continue his journey at the GIANTS.
“I arrived here as a teenager in a new country to learn a brand new game and even though it’s my fifth year, it still feels like a whirlwind adventure,” he said.
“The GIANTS are my home and it’s been a really exciting season so far under a new coach in Adam. Everyone is really clear on their roles and I’m just excited to be able to play my part and for the team to get some wins over the past month.
“It was a super easy decision to re-sign and I’m really excited to continue to work on my game and hopefully there’s some really exciting times to come.”
Brown and the GIANTS take on Hawthorn on Saturday at 4:35pm.
