The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS’ cheer squad has been working hard over the past fortnight, creating banners for their team to run through in the first few rounds of 2012.

The GIANTS are in a unique position this year as they build a cheer squad and have been relying on the support of some extremely dedicated and committed club members such as Scott Rau.

Scott is originally from Albury and moved to Sydney to join the Navy. As a Carlton supporter, Scott saw the GIANTS as a great opportunity to watch more live football in NSW and become involved with a club from the ground up.

“I’ve always been a Carlton supporter but I can only get to two or three games a year,” he said. “The GIANTS coming to Sydney gives me a chance to get in with a club from the start. The best way to watch AFL is live and now I can do a lot more of that.

“I knew that with a new team, the GIANTS would need help at the beginning to help us build a cheersquad.

“I don’t really have a favourite player yet but I’m looking forward to seeing what Setanta O’hAilpin can do when he gets back from injury.”

After hours of hard work before the match, the GIANTS cheer squad took to the field for the first time on March 24 as they watched their team run through the banner before the club’s first ever match in the AFL.

Evoking the spirit of Neil Armstrong’s moon landing, the banner read: “One small step for the Giants. One Giant leap for AFL.”

“Round one was a lot of work but it was worth it. Our banner was only on the field for about a minute but the imagery afterwards looked great and a lot of people saw the work that we put in.”

This weekend, Scott will board a plane to Tasmania and head up the GIANTS cheer squad for the club’s first away game against North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena.

“Tasmania should be good this weekend. I jumped at the chance when I was asked to go to the game.”

Scott urged others who are thinking about joining the GIANTS cheer squad to show their commitment to the club and get involved.

“There are a small group of us at the moment so it would be great if we could get more people to come along and help us out.

“You really just need to be enthusiastic and willing to offer that level of support to the club. Cheer squads are a special part of the AFL.”
