The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS wish to congratulate assistant coach Luke Power, who was today announced as the 2012 AFL Players Madden Medallist.

The AFL Players’ Association Madden Medal is awarded to the retiring player who throughout his career has demonstrated on-field excellence, personal development and growth, as well as community spirit.

GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said that the award was a fitting recognition of Luke’s outstanding career and his contribution to the game and the wider community.

“Luke has had an incredible impact on our young playing group in the last 12 months. As one of the most respected people in the game his leadership both on and off the field has been impeccable,” he said.

“As a three time premiership player, captain of two AFL clubs and of course his leadership of the AFLPA, Luke has achieved so much over his 302 game career.

"From all of us at the GIANTS we wish congratulate Luke on this outstanding achievement which recognizes a truly remarkable career and we look forward to welcoming him into his new role as a full time assistant coach.”

Power played 20 games for the GIANTS in 2012 after playing 282 games with the Lions and will now take up a full-time coaching position with the GIANTS after being a playing/assistant coach this year.

Power was recently invited to speak on behalf of all retiring players at the official AFL Grand Final Function.

Power now joins Cameron Ling (2011), Brett Kirk (2010), Michael O’Loughlin (2009), Robert Harvey (2008) and Glenn Archer (2007) as winners of this prestigious award.
