GIANTS midfielder Devon Smith says the club’s goal in 2014 is simple. To win.
“We’re here to win,” he said. “We all grew up winning and were all really highly-rated individuals but now we want to get in a team environment and get wins on the board.”
It’s exactly one month to the GIANTS’ first NAB Challenge match against the Swans at StarTrack Oval in Canberra and Smith said he can’t wait for the season to get started.
“It’s under three weeks until the intra-club match and I can’t wait, sometimes it gets a bit fiery and a bit heated,” Smith said.
“It’s exciting, we’re about to move into our new facilities and I can’t wait for that, it will give us a new boost, a fresh feeling - we’re all excited, we can’t wait to get into it.”
After hip surgery at the end of last season, Smith has been back in full training for almost two months now and has his sights set on his 50th game milestone in 2014.
“It’d be nice to play another 12 games and play 50 games,” said Smith.
“I’ve got to pinch myself now, you don’t even think, three years into it now and nearly my 50th game.”
Smith said with a number of recruits there would be fierce competition for spots at the GIANTS this season.
“It’s tough for positions this year, we’re going to win this year and no-one’s getting games, as Leon said,” Smith told GIANTSTV.
“Everyone’s got to work hard for your spot and even your pick one and pick two, the two are fitting in well and if they deserve a spot they’ll get in.
“We’re loving it.”
And after moving from the small Victorian town of Lara to Australia’s biggest city over two years ago, Smith is well and truly settled into life in Sydney.
“I actually just bought a boat so Jeremy (Cameron) and I have been taking that around the Harbour and getting to know the place a lot better.
