The Stephen Coniglio and the Amanda Farrugia Cups have been run and won in Bass Hill last week with hundreds of Western Sydney students taking part in the event.
The event, which is run with the support of Multicultural NSW, is targeted at secondary students in years seven and eight to teach them more about the game and encourage them to stay active.
Students not only get the opportunity to learn more about AFL, but students who perform exceptionally well will be invited to trial with GIANTS' Development Program and Stephen Coniglio Academy.
GIANTS AFL co-captain Stephen Coniglio and inaugural AFLW captain Amanda Farrugia, who the cups are named after, were both on hand to help with the presentations to the awards winners, as was Multicultural NSW Advisory Board Member Omer Incekara and local MP Wendy Lindsay.
Following what has been a big year for the GIANTS community team - who ran three Coniglio and Farrugia Cups in one year due to earlier COVID interruptions - GIANTS Head of Community Ali Faraj was thrilled to have wrapped up another successful event and thanked Multicultural NSW for their ongoing support.
“We’re very fortunate and honoured to have our partnership with Multicultural NSW. Their support over the last three years to get this carnival happening was imperative to the success of the program, and to see so many young kids from multicultural backgrounds out having a kick really puts a smile on my face,” Faraj said.
Amanda Farrugia, who also attended the day as a teacher with her school Our Lady of Mercy College in Parramatta, was pleased to be able to be part of the day as both a past player and coach.
“These kids have spent the last two or three years cooped up in their homes not doing a lot of physical activity, so to have a community competition where all different schools, from all different parts of Sydney can become involved is crucial to reinvigorating them, and reminding them about the value of sport," she said.
“The GIANTS really see the value in giving back to their community, it’s crucial to keeping AFL at the forefront of kids' minds, and the community's minds out here.
“Western Sydney is GIANTS heartland so to give back is important, and the GIANTS do a terrific job of that."
Congratulations to all of the individual and team award winners both on the day last week, and throughout the 2022 AFL season.
