The GIANTS recently spent some time in the schools in Canberra launching their new Indigenous community initiative, the GIANTS Harmony Program.

The launch comes as the GIANTS AFLW side prepare to take on the West Coast Eagles at GIANTS Stadium on Wangal Country this Saturday to celebrate Indigenous Round.

The GIANTS Harmony Program aims to share traditional knowledge to schools, teaching the students about Indigenous culture and traditional practices to help bring an understanding of our shared Australian history to the next generation.

The program which is facilitated in conjunction with Josh Sly who works in the cultural education space provides stories of our Indigenous elders and ancestors; teaches children about their obligation to Mother Earth; and helps them learn about their connection to the land and all living and non-living things.

This is done through interactive workshops, through dance, artwork, song and storytelling.

GIANTS’ Indigenous Inclusion and Diversity Manager Malcolm Lynch was pleased to see such a great response from the students following the launch.

“It’s been a great few days in Canberra launching our Harmony Program” Lynch said.

“We love being able to spend time in the community in Canberra, but also that we can provide such an impactful program for these kids to be a part of is really special.

“As a professional sporting organisation, we have a role to play in educating our community about their Indigenous history, and the Harmony Program is a fun and interactive way for these kids to learn about that.

“Josh did a terrific job with all of the schools over the two days that we were there, and you can see from the smiles on all of the kids’ faces that they’ve really enjoyed their time with us.

“I’d also like to thank our program partner Rubik3 who support the GIANTS Harmony Program. We would not be able to run successful programs like this in the community without the continued support of our partners,” Lynch added.

The GIANTS hope to grow this program in the future, visiting more schools in both the ACT and NSW.
