Last Time They Met: With the competition expanding to the full 18-team competition this season, there are opponents that the GIANTS have no head-to-head history against. The two sides did meet in a practice match in August this year and it was the GIANTS who got the upper hand by 18 points at Tramways Oval.
TV & Online: The match will be broadcast live from 2:30pm on 7Mate in NSW and ACT, as well as Foxtel, Kayo and the Official AFLW App.
What it Means for the GIANTS: Both teams are going to be hungry to take the first-ever AFLW Sydney Derby win, but none more than the GIANTS who have been the first AFLW side for all of NSW and ACT since 2017. The intensity and passion of a cross-town rivalry in any code takes to a new level and after a tough week on the injury front for the GIANTS they’ll be looking to dig deep, perform and get not only the first Derby win, but their first win of the season.
Where’s the Opposition At: The Swans are just two games into their AFLW history. Sitting winless so far in their inaugural campaign, the Swans have been defeated by the Saints and ‘Pies in their games to date and similar to the GIANTS, are on the hunt for their first win of the season.
Player Watch: Jess Doyle – the 18-year-old made an impressive start to her AFLW career last season and the former Swans Academy graduate has continued her impressive form early on in season seven. The skilful left footer, who averaged a goal a game in season six, has kicked the opening goals for the GIANTS in both games so far this season. The GIANTS’ new game-plan this season involves kicking more goals and Doyle is certainly contributing on that front.
In the Mix: The GIANTS will be required to use the depth of their squad this week, with three key players moving to the long-term injury list earlier this week. Subject to passing a final fitness test and clearance at training later this week, Nicola Barr could be eyeing off a return for her first game of season seven, while exciting draftee Zarlie Goldsworthy could be on the verge of making her delayed AFLW debut.
