GIANTS coach Leon Cameron admits his club will take a "calculated risk" when it adds Shane Mumford back to the list in the upcoming mid-season draft.
Cameron confirmed the news after Mumford flagged his intentions to come out of retirement for the 6th time in his career last week.
“After consulting my family, the coaches and the medical staff I’ve decided to go against their advice and return to the game,” said Mumford.
“People will say my body isn’t right to be playing at AFL level right now and they’re absolutely right.”
Mumford has signed a contract that’ll tie the 35-year-old to the GIANTS until the end of the 2022 season. The GIANTS have included a trigger clause in the contract that will allow the club to extend Mumford’s contract by a year, should he choose not to retire again.
Mumford played 21 games for Geelong in 2008 and 2009 before switching to the Sydney Swans for more opportunity, winning a premiership in 2012.
He played 79 games for the Swans before being traded to the GIANTS in 2013 and despite playing 114 games for the club, the former Kevin Sheedy Medallist says he has unfinished business in the AFL.
“I’ve still got so much to give at this level,” Mumford said.
“My goal is to continue playing for the GIANTS until I can run out alongside my two sons, both who are currently aged under six.
Mumford, who retired yet again at the end of the 2021 season, said he did so to escape pre-season.
“If I’m honest I retired at the end of last season to avoid the pre-season, I’ve done enough of them,” he said.
“I’ve had a good break now, the body’s feeling average to say the least, but I suppose I can do it again if I have to.”
