GIANTS AFLW Captain Amanda Farrugia has been rewarded for a standout local season, taking out her second Mostyn Medal as AFL Sydney’s Premier Division Best and Fairest.
After first winning the Mostyn Medal in 2015, the star midfielder and Macquarie University Captain took out her second award at Doltone House in Pyrmont on Monday night.
On the back of her first season with the GIANTS’ AFL Women’s team, Farrugia was dominant in 2017 as she re-joined Macquarie University for the local season.
Known as ‘Fridge’, she amassed an incredible 28 votes in her 16 home and away season games. She was also damaging on the score board, kicking 12 goals across the length of the season.
Farrugia polled an impressive 11 times throughout the count, including six best on ground performances.
The Mostyn Medallist said she enjoyed her football in 2017 and that she had noticed a remarkable lift in standard of play across all teams.
“It’s been a pretty busy year to be honest with you, especially on the back of the AFLW season,” Farrugia said upon accepting her award.
“But it was quite nice coming back to Macquarie University because it is such familiar territory. It’s the only club I will probably ever play for.”
Former number one draft pick Nicola Barr finished in second place playing for Sydney University, with her teammate and inaugural GIANT Stephanie Walker finishing in fourth spot.
Amanda took out the Mostyn Medal by three votes, finishing ahead of Barr (25 votes), UNSW Eastern Suburbs Stingrays’ Phoebe Monahan (23 votes), and Walker (17 votes).
