The Kevin Sheedy Medal is the award given to the GIANTS player determined to have been the Club Champion throughout an AFL season.
Named after inaugural GIANTS coach Kevin Sheedy, Sheedy has an unparalleled standing in the game.
On the field, he represented Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s and 1970s, and then coached fellow Victorian side Essendon for nearly three decades. He is second in the Australian Football League (AFL) record for the most games combined as a player and coach.
In November 2009, Sheedy was appointed the Head Coach of newly formed GIANTS for the inaugural 2012 season. It was only fitting that the decision was made to name the club’s premier award after Sheedy.
After announcing he would hand over the coaching reins to Leon Cameron at the end of the 2013 season, Sheedy coached his 679th and final game as a senior coach in the VFL-AFL, against the Gold Coast in September. After serving as a Director on the Board from 2014-2015 Sheedy moved back to Melbourne but remains a firm friend of the club.
Club Chairman, Tony Shepherd, highlighted Sheedy's importance to the GIANTS: "In many ways Kevin Sheedy is the father of the GIANTS. He's been here from the start and has helped build the GIANTS".
