The GIANTS have completed a successful trade period, securing Richmond star Brett Deledio as well as strengthening their draft position ahead of next month’s NAB AFL Draft.
Deledio, 29, played 243 games in a decorated career with the Tigers, winning the Jack Dyer Medal as Club Champion in 2008 and 2009 in addition to claiming All-Australian honours in 2012 and 2015.
A fortnight of trading has also seen the GIANTS move up the draft order to hold the second pick in next month’s national Draft, as well as another first round selection with pick 15.
The GIANTS also hold selections 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60 77, 109, 127 and 135 in next month’s Draft and two future second round selections in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.
Nine GIANTS found new homes during the trade period with Cam McCarthy moving to Fremantle, Paul Ahern becoming a Kangaroo, Jack Steele going to St Kilda, Pat McKenna landing at Melbourne, Will Hoskin-Elliott switching to Collingwood, James Stewart joining Essendon and the trio of Rhys Palmer, Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett finding a new home at Carlton.
GIANTS General Manager Football Wayne Campbell said it has been a productive trade period for the club.
“We’re delighted to not only welcome Brett Deledio to the GIANTS but also move up the draft order,” Campbell said.
“Brett is unquestionably one of the competition’s elite players and has shown over a long period of time an ability to play a variety of roles which we think will complement our list well.
“To hold picks two, 15 and a raft of lower selections has us in a strong position to secure some of the best talent from around the country as well as continue to bring through some talented players from our Academy.
“We farewelled a number of players who’ve served our club well in recent years during this trade period and we thank all of them for the contribution they have made to the GIANTS. We wish them the very best at their new homes.”
The NAB AFL Draft will be held in Sydney on Friday November 25.
