Thank You Canberra
The GIANTS have joined the ACT Government to say `Thank You Canberra’ in the lead-up to the club’s final game in Canberra for 2014.
The GIANTS will play North Melbourne for the Prime Minister’s Cup at StarTrack Oval this Saturday August 9.
GIANTS midfielder Stephen Coniglio presented new ACT Sports Minister Shane Rattenbury with a GIANTS jumper at a meeting in Canberra with Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr.
The GIANTS ‘Thank You Canberra’ campaign recognises the support provided by the ACT community since the club entered the AFL in 2012.
GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said Canberra was an integral part of the club and it looked forward to a long and successful partnership.
“We play four games a year in Canberra including the NAB Cup and recorded the club’s first ever win here in 2012 against the Gold Coast Suns,” he said.
“It is a city with a rich AFL heritage which has produced some of the greatest players the game has seen. We’ve been delighted with the support we have received from the people of Canberra in a short space of time and we look forward to seeing them again at StarTrack Oval this Saturday.
“We want to continue to invest in Canberra through great events and entertainment and the ongoing community work by our players and staff. We are also committed to providing a pathway for local young talent to the elite level of the game through our PM Capital GIANTS Academy program.”
Minister Barr said: “Canberrans are really embracing the club and recognising the GIANTS’ partnership with the community provides an opportunity for Canberra and the region to really be part of the AFL.
“At games and around the city you can see a growing support base for the GIANTS with an increasing amount of orange at each match and more stickers on cars every year.”
Minister Rattenbury said: “Elite sport can inspire participation and greater engagement. Aligned with the GIANTS’ entry into the AFL and the higher profile that this provides we are seeing an increasing number of children, particularly girls, having a go at AFL and getting active.”
The GIANTS will play North Melbourne this Saturday August 9 at StarTrack Oval Canberra at 1.45pm. Tickets are available through Ticketek.
