Like Father, Like Son
With football in his blood, Josh Kelly - the son of a former North Melbourne wingman Phil Kelly - is officially a GIANT after last night's NAB AFL Draft.
Widely considered the best young midfielder in the country, Josh Kelly became a GIANT after being selected with pick number two in last night’s Draft.
Kelly was at the Draft on the Gold Coast with his family and said the moment his name was read out by the GIANTS was one he had been waiting for all year.
His father Phil Kelly played 61 games as a wingman for North Melbourne in the 1980s after crossing from Western Australia where he won two Sandover Medals for East Perth in the WAFL.
“It doesn’t become official until they read your name out on stage so having my name finally read out was a huge relief,” Kelly told AFL.com.au.
“First up I want to try and earn the respect of the group so I’m going to put in 100 per cent on the training track and I want to try and become the best I can.”
From the Sandringham Dragons, Kelly is a skilful midfielder renowned for his aerobic capacity.
He cemented his reputation as the best young midfielder in the nation by making the All Australian team at this year’s NAB Under-18 National championships.
He is an elite kick and he won the 3km time trial at this year’s NAB AFL Draft Combine with a time of 9min 32sec - the second fastest ever in testing.
Kelly said he can’t wait to get started at the GIANTS and is hoping for some senior action in 2014.
“I need to go and have a big pre-season, try and put on a few kilos and then I’ll reassess with the coaching staff but I want to try and get out there for sure,” he said.
GIANTS List Manager Stephen Silvagni told AFL.com.au Kelly was a worthy number two draft pick.
“We’re delighted to have Josh on board. We think he’s obviously a quality midfielder and happy to have him at our club.”
Kelly joins number one pick, key forward Tom Boyd and a West Australian pair - tall forward Cameron McCarthy and ruckman Rory Lobb - at the GIANTS after last night’s NAB AFL Draft.
